NJ Offshore Wind Simulations

The New Jersey Commerce, Economic Growth & Tourism Commission supported a consumer opinion survey in the Summer of 2006 to quantify reasons for New Jersey shore visitors to travel to New Jersey, and measure their attitudes to the sight of wind turbines at various distances off shore and in different weather conditions. A series of detailed technical renderings - using GPS positioning combined with digital photography - were developed to depict the views of the turbines used in the study. You can see these renderings by clicking on the pictures below.

On September 14, 2006, the New Jersey Shore Opinion Study About Offshore Wind Turbines report was released. The report, conducted by an independent research organization, found that:

  • More residents and visitors were in favor of an offshore wind project than opposed by an almost 2 to 1 margin.
  • Distance from shore and familiarity with the technology were found to be key variables in respondents' viewpoints.
  • Among people who visit the New Jersey Shore, the vast majority (72%) indicate the location of wind turbines off the shore would not have an impact on future visits.
